Summer at Anderson Ranch Arts Center will once again be filled with contemporary artists, critics and journalists, as the Ranch introduces a new Symposium Series and brings back its popular Featured Artists Series.
The new Symposium Series is an exciting addition to our summer events, said Nancy Wilhelms, Executive Director. Were thrilled to share these thought-provoking leaders in the global art world with the community.
Oscar-winning director and artist Steve McQueen will serve as keynote speaker of a two-day symposium, Making the Change They Want to See, August 13-14. Curated by Anne Pasternak, President and Artistic Director of Creative Time, this symposium invites Mel Chin, Holland Cotter, Pedro Reyes and Superflex, along with Mr. McQueen, to share how they are working to bring greater justice into the world through their insights, provocations and creation of new models of change.
Artists are feeling an urgency to use their creative skills and freedoms to help solve some of the key problems of our day, said Ms. Pasternak. The artists participating in the Making the Change They Want to See symposium refuse to be passive bystanders just pointing to issues. Who better than artists to ring the alarm bell and help shape the change we wish to see?
Also part of the Symposium Series is a panel discussion that takes place on July 30 and brings together the four authors of The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium Eleanor Heartney, Helaine Posner, Nancy Princenthal and Sue Scott, along with renowned photographer Catherine Opie. The panel will explore and discuss the evolving status and concerns of women artists who followed the pioneering artists of the 1970s.
The Featured Artists Series has brought a number of vibrant artists to the Roaring Fork Valley in years past, and 2014 promises to be an equally entertaining season with artists Wendell Castle (July 10), Theaster Gates (July 19), Charles Gaines (July 24), Catherine Opie (July 31) and Ron Nagle (August 7).
All presentations that are part of the Featured Artists Series, as well as The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium symposium, are at 12:30 p.m. on the days offered and are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so advanced registration is required. The Making the Change They Want to See symposium is a paid, ticketed event at $ 500 for general admission seating or $ 250 for summer 2014 students and faculty of the Ranch and National Council members. JULY 30 – The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium
Panel Discussion with the four authors: Eleanor Heartney, Helaine Posner, Nancy Princenthal and Sue Scott, along with photographer Catherine Opie.
What does feminism mean to women artists today? Does it still make sense to talk about art by women as a distinct category? How does the work of women artists reflect contemporary concerns? How are women artists faring vis-a-vis men in the hyper-commercialized contemporary art market?
This panel explores the evolving status and concerns of women artists who followed the pioneering feminist artists of the 1970s. It brings together the authors of The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium, a book published in the fall of 2013 by the authors of the earlier, prizewinning book After the Revolution: Women who Transformed Contemporary Art. Eleanor Heartney, Nancy Princenthal, Helaine Posner and Sue Scott will discuss the work of women artists born after 1960, with a focus on changing attitudes toward the body and sexuality; the globalization of social and political issues; introspection, dream and fantasy as subversive strategies; and contemporary responses to societys mixed messages about gender roles and the domestic sphere. Catherine Opie, one of the artists featured in the book, will discuss her work in relationship to ideas of family.

Theaster Gates recently said art is a place to assert ones right to say difficult things. This is indeed true. After all, through countless media, artists freely and creatively tell us stories that help us understand ourselves and interpret our world. They are looking at the sublime as well as the painful. The artist Joan Jonas described this as the artists central role, the role of translation. But it shouldnt be a surprise that in what is surely the most complicated era in human history, artists are wanting to do more than just translate. Artists are feeling an urgency to use their creative skills and freedoms to help solve some of the key problems of our day.
